Decided at the last moment to go out and try my hand at capturing some shots of the Solar Eclipse on May 20, 2012. I knew the sun would set here in Iowa before the total eclipse happened, but it was still a fun time and experience.
Not having any welder’s glass or ND 400 filter readily available, I turned to another option. The magnetic film inside a floppy disk! After doing a bit of online research (ok, I googled it), I tore open a few floppy disks and made a custom filter to fit over my 200mm zoom lens. I also made a couple of filters using cardboard to use as handheld viewers. I didn’t have to go far, as there was a perfect viewing area just south of town. Set up and tripod, taped my homemade filter to my lens and I was in business!
