Storms were forecast to develop in the NW MO, NE KS, SE NE, SW IA region towards evening. In keeping with the theme of non-cooperative weather in 2010, things didn’t fire until well after sunset. I made the lovely drive to SW IA as did lots of other chasers.
You know it’s going to be a good chase when you encounter hail on your way to your target area! An elevated storm was just SW of town as I was leaving and moving rapidly NE. Just north of Melcher, Iowa I ran into the hail path. Luckily I managed to miss some of the larger hail stones that were reported. Consequently, this was more action that I was going to see for the rest of the day.
My target area was the Mt. Ayr area, so after arriving and waiting for 2 hours, I decided to pack it in and come back home.
Thoughts: 2010 seems to hate me. I don’t know why, but it does! Between the many inches of snow this winter, to the lack of decent storms this spring so far. The only thing I can hope for is a decent and active May/June. I did get to test my new laptop and it worked flawlessly. Hopefully it continues to perform as well for the rest of the year!
