April 3, 2011 – Short SE IA chase

Spent a few hours this evening chasing (literally) an explosive line of severe thunderstorms.  It was another triple point set up, with not much in the way of storms expected as a strong cap was in place over the state.  As temps soared to record levels (topped out at 88 here in Knoxville), storms finally exploded over eastern Marion County.  In a matter of minutes, the storms became severe warned and eventually developed into a line trucking east/northeast at 45-50 knots.  Needless to say, even leaving within minutes of initiation, I didn’t have much of a chance of catching up with them.

Followed the line to near Sigourney, Iowa and eventually called it off as it was getting dark and the storms were a movin.  Saw some excellent structure and possibly the early stages of a wall cloud.  Numerous and I mean Numerous chasers were out so the storms were pretty well covered.  Let’s hope we can get these puppies to slow down a little bit!! 😉
